It was May 30, 1979 when the great managerial double act of Brian Clough & Peter Taylor led Forest to unimaginable peaks by winning the European Cup. The moment which went into Nottingham folklore, & sealed a 1-0 victory over Malmo in Munich, came just before half-time when John Robertson delivered a superb left-wing cross & Trevor Francis acrobatically headed the ball into the net. It may have been an unremarkable final, but it was certainly the end to a remarkable story. Under their maverick manager Brian Clough, Nottingham Forest, a relatively small English provincial club, had won European club football’s biggest prize. In a competition that had started with the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus & Liverpool taking part, it was Nottingham Forest who had run out winners.
