The Shimano R550 SPD-SL Resin Road pedal is a lighter & sleeker version of Shimano’s entry level R540 road pedal. The R550 pedal works in the same way, & takes the same cleats, as the R540 but comes in 30grams lighter & has a lower profile look on the bike. If you are weight conscious, or looking to upgrade from the R540 then this is a good choice. The R550 uses a large 3 bolt pattern cleat similar to the Look road pedals. The large cleat on the R550, & the wide pedal body, gives much more contact between your foot & the pedal than on a standard SPD for better power transfer & enhanced comfort on longer rides.
