The aftercare is simple too & their slug resistance once again emphasises their staying power. This is definitely a must-have in every garden! The best growing conditions for penstemons require planting in a sunny or semi-shaded area with fertile & well-drained soil. Penstemons can tolerate dryer soils once they are established but dislike & are damaged by heavy soils that are very cold & wet in the winter. If you have to plant in heavy soil, adding plenty of coarse grit before planting would be recommended. Removing faded blooms will prolong the penstemon’s flowering, to give extra protection against frost in winter apply dry mulch around the base of the plant to protect the roots.
