Gosling's Black Seal is a full-flavoured dark, barrel-aged rum blended in Bermuda from three distinctly different, imported triple pot-distilled rums. The rum is then aged for three years in re-charred American oak barrels previously used to age bourbon. Gosling's rum is Bermuda's largest export. In the spring of 1806 James Gosling, a London wine & spirits merchant, chartered the ship Mercury, loaded it with £10, 000 worth of merchandise, & sent his eldest son James to set sail for America. After ninety-one desperate days on rough seas the charter ran out & they put into the nearest port, St. George's, Bermuda. Determined to make the best of the situation he found himself in, James opened a shop on the King's Parade, St. George's, in December 1806 to sell the goods he'd shipped from Engl&. James returned to England in 1824 but his brother Ambrose took a shop on Front Street in the new capital of Hamilton. In 1857 the firm, know as Ambrose Gosling & Son, was renamed Gosling Brothers. Sometime around 1860 the company imported the first casks of rum to Bermuda & created this distinctive dark blend, originally sold to locals at cask strength straight from the barrel it was simply called ‘ Old Rum'. This continued until the First World War, when the company began filling champagne bottles reclaimed from the British Officers' mess. The corks were secured in place with the use of black sealing wax, prompting people to refer to the brand as ‘ Black Seal'. People began asking for the rum with the ‘black seal & eventually a play on words gave birth to the barrel juggling ‘ Black Seal' which still graces the label today. ...

A family business for over two centuries, Gosling's was founded in 1806 by James Gosling & is Bermuda's oldest business house & largest exporter of locally made product. Originally called ' Old Rum', the company's flagship ' Black Seal Rum' was not sold by the bottle until after World War One, when it was packaged in Champagne bottles (the most widely available bottle at the time) & sealed with black wax, hence the name which has stuck. Over the years, Black Seal Rum has become synonymous with the Bermuda region

But, they leave it resting in oak barrels even longer, aging it until it has acquired an extra luscious, nuanced complexity much like a rare Scotch or Cognac. Consider it the ultimate sipping rum. A spirit this unusual deserves more than the usual bottle & label. So they lovingly take each bottle, hand label it, dip it in wax, number it, encircle it with a metal band & then place it in a straw-filled wooden box reminiscent of days past. Finally, with not too modern merchandising, they substitute a clear Plexiglass sliding panel for wood, so that all this hard work can be viewed at home. Gosling's point?
