The Ford Escort Mk2 rally
car needs no
introduction. If you love
your rallying you'll know
this was the most
successful rally car ever
when it dominated the
motorsport during the
1970s. We are really
quite excited to say this

The iconic RS1800 won
every single consecutive
RAC rally from 1975 to
1979 and of course pulled
off the WRC one-two in
1979 with Bjorn Waldegard
on top of the podium
Hannu Mikkola as runner
up and Ari Vatanen fifth.
Totally epic. This
incredible rally car held
its own right up until
the fledgling years of
the four wheel drive
generation of rally cars
headed by the Audi
Quattro in the early 80s.
Even today nothing beats
the sound and sight of a
MkII Escort hammering it
around a rally course.
You can hear the breathy
engine-wail way before
you can see it and when
the Escort does come into
view it's invariably at a
near-impossible sideways
angle. That seminal
Cosworth engine was
without doubt most at
home in the Welsh forest
wining endless rally
stages. And who could
forget those classic
Rothmans and Castrol
liveries and those
extra-large wheel arches?
Not even the fact that
front vision was pretty
useless through the front
windscreen (which is why
you often saw drivers and
co-drivers peering
through the side
windows!) could detract
from the sheer charm.
Simplicity and
drivability is what makes
this car an enduring
icon. That is the beauty
of the Escort Mk2 rally
car. It's low kerb weight
and perfectly balanced
rear wheel drive set up
means you can get the
rear end swinging out

exit the corner and

The co-pilot reads the
pace notes and this is
when you hear things like

concentrating on the
rallying lingo and

Mitsubishi on the track
at the same time would be
a bit tricky so expect
your instructions be
along the lines of 'Brake

progressive on the gas

pretty noisy in a proper
rally car (there's none
of that refinery like
rear seats or arm rests
to soften the rattling
sounds!) so as you're
hooning it around the
stage snug in the
driver's seat in your
rally harness you'll use
an intercom that's
integrated into your face
helmet to communicate -
just like a real set

limit on an extreme rally
challenge! This full day
of rallying will see you
getting to grips with the
power and torque of one
or two of the world's
finest Group N rally cars
- the Subaru Impreza and
the Mitsubishi
Lancer.Having a driving
licence to be able drive
on the public roads is a
very different set of
skills to being able to
rally. The challenges are
much more extreme as the
pace is just so fast and
you'll find you have to
have reaction skills that
function within a split
second to be a world
class rallyer.And of
course you're not out
there on your own. The
other essential human
part of the set up is the
co-driver the one who has
the pace notes for the
stage. As you're motoring
along rattling the
dampers and sending
plumes of dust flying the
co-driver is the one who
has to keep calm keep
looking down at their
notes and communicate the
route ahead for the
driver. Not an easy
job.As you can see
rallying is definitely a
double act and on these
extreme rallying days out
you and your instructor
will form a potentially
WRC stage winning pair as
you set about learning
the craft of this most
thrilling of motorsports
at your choice of circuit
including airfield
circuits and full-on
tree-lined stages.When it
comes to the cars you
can't much better than
these babies. The
category group N might
have been replaced by NR4
in 2015 but the essence
is still the same in that
the cars are pretty much
identical to mainstream
production versions save
few a few specific and
limited mods that teams
are allowed to carry out.
So if you buy a Subaru
WRX STi or an Evo at a
dealers it won't be that
much different to the
Group N ones you see on
the circuits.One thing is
certain to win an extreme
rally challenge you need
to be consistent out
there. As each rally is
made up of several stages
drivers need to be pretty
nifty on a variety of
surfaces as well as
adaptable to quickly
challenging conditions
due to the weather (who
hasn't loved a Finnish
rally stage in the snow
or a wet Welsh forest leg
on the telly?). This full

formed Mini Cooper rally
car! OK the minis aren't
actually as little as
they used to be in
Charlie Croker's time but
these modern Cooper S
versions certainly pack a
serious punch. There's
even a wee bit of rally
spirit to these Mini cars

Prodrive is an all wheel

that was developed in
partnership with

little Japanese
superminis has featured
in many a rally
championship world wide
and even has its own race
series in several
countries. This is your

there's no tarmac here. A
three-mile loose gravel
stage has been carved out
of the ground to make for
a pretty
authentically-styled
rally stage right here in
the middle of the
countryside near Saffron
Walden. And they only do

the generations of the
Clark family who own
Langley Lawn Farm. Whilst
the farming business

Hark back to the classic
days of Group B rallying
on these Sierra Cosworth
rally experiences! The
Sierra rally car was a
bit of an icon in the
motorsport world of the
mid 1980s. Hundreds of
thousands of L and GL
versions (remember them?)
roamed the streets but on
the rally track it was
the Sierra Cosworth that
ruled the roost. Well
when we say that Ford
Motorsport's Sierra RS
Cosworth never actually
won a World Championship
title overall - but the
car and its drivers
certainly had some
serious fun trying. The
likes of rallying legends
Carlos Sainz Stig
Blomquist and Ari Vatanen
have all been at the
wheel of a Sierra
Cosworth rally with many
a stage win.The problem
was the Ford Sierra was
rallying at a time when
the newfangled four wheel
drive mean machines were
coming out in force led
by the Lancia Delta
Integrale and the Toyota
Celica. Whilst holding
its own on the tarmac
stages the rear wheel
drive Cossie just
couldn't match these cars
for grip on gravel no
matter how much power it
boasted. But in today's
motorsporting world where
every car is all wheel
drive it's a real
rallying treat to be able
to drive the rear wheel
drive Ford Cosworth. This
centre has a souped up
four door Sierra Sapphire
saloon and the classic
two-door RS Cosworth -
complete with mahoosive
whale tail. We have to
say there will be a lot
of overseer on the gravel
stage if you don't get
the Cossy under control.

driving along a surface

is the classic and all
time best head to head
line up with this duo of
of delights from Japan's
top-notch automotive
engineers getting on down
in the dirt and the dust
- and all with you at the
wheel.Ask anyone with
even just a remote
interest in rallying to
name a brand of car
synonymous with the
motorsport in the 1980s
and 90s and one half will
probably say Mitsubishi
and the other half will
tell you Subaru. These
are proper thoroughbreds
of the power sliding
world with handling
that's second to none and

Subaru and the Evo will
be shod in genuine rally
tyres (more grip more
side slippage) both are
turbocharged and both are
equipped with all wheel

untrained eye they even
look rather similar with
both boasting that
aggressive styling and
huge rear spoiler.Look
under the bonnet and
you'll find the Subaru
has a larger 2.5l engine
and it's a Boxer at that
(i.e. flat four) but the
2.0l Evo still pips the
Scooby on torque. Hmm.
Rumours amongst petrol
heads range from claims
that the Evo was brought
out to compete with the
STi to owners saying the
Evo is a 'hangar queen'
that's to say in the
garage quite a lot yet
when it is running it
out-handles the Subaru.We
say brush the rumours
aside and decide for
yourself which is the
best of these two
Japanese ninjas when you

briefings are kept to a
minimum and all teaching
takes place in the cars
