As the fighter commands battled to defend the British shores aircraft such as the Spitfire and Hurricane were key to our aerial defences. Thankfully all is calm on the western front for these sorties making them all together more leisurely outings for all involved but you can just imagine what it must have been like as a young RAF pilot in a Spitfire. Once you've taken off it's just a quick hop northwards towards the village of Leeds for the Devon to get into position ready for the arrival of the star of the show. It's steeped in aviation history having served as a World War One flight training school. In peacetime it became Shenley Farm once more before being made a strategic fighter base during WW2. From the Royal Canadian Air Force to the USAF various squadrons were based at Lashenden. Nowadays it's busy and popular General Aviation - especially on the days when the dual fighter experiences are taking place! Will you lose your wool or will you fly like an experienced old lag when you get the chance to feel what it'd be like to learn to fly a Spitfire? Take a step back into aviation history and get yourself posted to IWM Duxford for a spot of Spitfire pilot training where you'll follow the same flight path as many young RAF pilots in the midst of World War Two.As war broke out the Allied Forces soon realised there was a huge shortage of pilots so in 1939 The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan was agreed and put into action. This ambitious (and very rapid) flight training programme saw young sign-ups being taught flying skills at schools around the Commonwealth in record time with the target of 50 000 new pilots a year. On these one and two day courses you'll get insight to what it must have been like during those first hours of tailwheel training! For most budding young pilots the ultimate goal having learnt to fly was to convert onto Spitfires - the seminal tail-chasing battle fighter of the skies protecting Blighty and taking the flak from the Luftwaffe. But before then there was the small question of flying solo. Recruits were expected to be going solo in the good old yellow peril Tiger Moth in as a few as eight hours else you were 'scrubbed' and sent off to gunner or navigator courses. So when you enrol at the Spitfire school your pilot training starts in exactly the same way with a flight in the Moth or the Chipmunk the ideal starting point for learning tailwheel skills. Then your new-found aerial competence will be tested (just as they were for many Spitfire hopefuls) with a flight in the Harvard (or the North American T-6 Texan) which is an altogether more complicated machine where pilots had the chance to show the aptitude in the air that'd make them the ideal fighter pilot in a Spitfire.A few of those who passed their pilot training with flying colours would indeed be sent to front line fighter squadrons with a fleet of Spitfires waiting. We can only imagine what it must have felt like when a new RAF recruit met the formidable Spit for the first time. Sitting proud on the tarmac with that distinctive wing shape and aggressive nose she's both elegant and fearsome at the same time and awe-inspiring for all young recruits. That's exactly how you'll feel during this Spitfire school's finale - the moment you go up in a two seater T9. As your pilot instructor releases the brakes it's stick back open that throttle and bring the stick forward to neutral as the tail lifts and before you know it you're airborne sitting there in a Spitfire cockpit with the best possible view ever of those elegant elliptical wings. Flying heaven we think you'd agree is the day that you learned to fly a Spitfire.
Join in with these very special Spitfire flights from Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent by flying right up there beside that glorious fighter plane! Everyone loves the Spitfire. For many it's the symbol of the Second World War and a poignant reminder of those who gave their lives for us. These experiences focus on the Battle of Britain over the skies of Kent. Both the plane you'll be flying in and the Spitfire will be departing from Headcorn airfield. Formerly RAF Lashenden this was where hundreds of missions were flown by Spitfires and Mustangs at the height of the war between 1942 and 1943. Even today the vestiges of the WW2 squadrons based here remain and there's a fascinating wartime museum. It's hugely significant that Headcorn is the base for these Spitfire flight experiences. You will be boarding a de Havilland Devon for your flight. These were the people carriers of the sky in the post-war years with the Devon ferrying military personnel whilst civilian passengers flew in services operated by the Dove which was the commercial version of this hugely popular aircraft. Flying in it today is quite a sensation - made all the more thrilling when you're escorted in the air by a Spitfire! Once airborne out of Headcorn you'll head towards the Kent coast. With the Spitfire joining you the flight path takes you to the cliffs at Capel-le-Ferne. This is where the hugely emotive and provocative stone-carved Battle of Britain Memorial stands with its contemplative airman looking out to sea. It really is remarkable to look down on this from air especially with the Spitfire flying along with you. Don't be surprised if you feel really emotional at this point… Those on the extended 40-minute flights will continue to track the Spitfire towards the White Cliffs of Dover and South Foreland Lighthouse whilst the 30-minute flight turns back at this point. And as you head back to base there's time to reflect on the day you got to fly at the same time as these historic Spitfire flights out of Headcorn literally side-by-side with this wonderful aircraft. Just magical.
Chocks away for a very special Dambusters Spitfire flight! This is vintage military aviation at its very best as you fly over historic Eyebrook Reservoir in a de Havilland Devon accompanied by a Spitfire. It'll be a magnificent MkIX Spitfire that'll be joining you in the air. Beautifully restored and maintained TD314 now flies under the moniker 'St George' and it's a superb example of this impressive fighter plane. And whilst the St George is undoubtedly the star of the show the plane you'll be flying in for this tour is actually quite special too… The de Havilland Devon is the military equivalent of the Dove civil passenger plane. It boasts a very retro 1950s style harking back to the decade when post-war air travel was quite literally just starting to take off. G-DHDV flying under the serial number VP981 has a fascinating flying history. This included a stint as the personal air transport for Sir Basil Embry when he was Commander of Allied Forces Central Europe based in France. After a final role as the crew plane for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight from 1985 this graceful Devon was retired from military life. For her new lease of life operating de Havilland Devon flights alongside the St George Spitfire she has kept her resplendent RAF livery. What's more the cabin configuration inside couldn't be better for observing the Spitfire flying beside you. Carrying a maximum of just eight passengers in a one by one configuration every seat is a window seat and they are really large windows at that - nothing like the commercial jets of today! This all means you are guaranteed fabulous unobstructed views from the de Havilland Devon as the glorious Spitfire glides effortlessly into view. The back drop of Eyebrook Reservoir is highly appropriate too. This is where Dambuster training sessions took place in May 1943 prior to the raids. All in all your Dambusters Spitfire flight lasts around 40 minutes and once back in the hangar try and make time to visit delightful on-site Aviation Museum - a must for historic aviation fans.

Both are exceptional locations offering the freedom of uncontrolled airspace. Headcorn boasts direct access to all the famous Battle of Britain locations from Capel-le-Ferne to the White Cliffs. Tail-dragging fun is the order of the day with the much-loved Tiger Moth. Then there's the brilliant Harvard.
