When it comes to vintage flights Compton Abbas is a great choice of airfield. A family-run affair with great facilities and lovely views this private airfield just south of Shaftesbury is offering you the chance to get airborne in an absolute favourite aircraft - the De Havilland Chipmunk. The Chippy as it is lovingly known certainly has staying power. It was developed by the Canadian arm of the aviation company in the post-war years as a replacement to the equally legendary Tiger Moth. Once it went into full production the likes of the Royal Canadian and Royal Air Forces both put in large orders for the Chipmunk. The Compton Abbas Chipmunk is a DHC-1 Chipmunk T-10 which means it was built in the UK. Coming off the production line in early 1952 she went into military service in April of the same year. As the standard primary trainer for the RAF Chipmunks were everywhere giving young trainee pilots their first taste of flying - and if you hear ex RAF pilots talk it's a taste that was never forgotten. Indeed the Chipmunk is just so elegant in flight and was a lively aircraft to learn to fly in. This Chipmunk donned the serial number W585 and was resident at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland for a good chunk of her RAF career. And she was still flying Air Cadets throughout the 1970s. We've even found a photo of her flying on Air Experience Flights for Air Cadets out of Edinburgh Airport in 1975 - and surprise surprise she still sports those authentic RAF colours today. After all those hours showing young pilots the skies on military trainer flights from the 1950s right through to the latest 80s W585 was then shipped to Cranwell to a rather less salubrious role as a gate guard. Luckily she was auctioned and in 2000 was fully restored with love and care by the Duxford team taking a civil registration in the process. She now flies as G-BZGA proudly operating vintage flights out of Compton Abbas airfield. We are offering 30 45 and 60-minute experience flights in this very fine tandem trainer. What's more the whole thing is filmed from inside the cockpit. This is available to purchase on the day so you can watch you flying in 1950s style over and over again!

After the tank there's the Tiger. Everyone just loves this plucky little military trainer plane. Our Tiger Moth in Shoreham flies out of this historic airport near Brighton and Hove the country's oldest licensed public-serving airfield having first opened its runways to air traffic way back in 1910. You could say it's harking back to halcyon days of flight! This Shoreham-based club offers you the choice of flying in a Tiger Moth or a Stampe. Both are classic vintage biplanes and the Belgian-built Stampe is actually based on de Havilland's famous design. One difference is that the it has a tailwheel whereas the Tiger Moth has a tail slide. This means the Moth can only land on dry grass runways whilst the Stampe can use hard surfaces and grass meaning she can fly all year round. This particular post-war model was built in 1946 and served as a sporting trainer. The Tiger Moth is the oldest and longest serving plane here at Shoreham airport. Wonderful Tiger Moth flights over the Cotswolds! Classic aviation comes to the beautiful Cotswolds with a whole range of flight durations on offer. Departing from Cotswold Airport just a few miles from Cirencester it's going to be great views and great fun all the way!Back in the day this was RAF Kemble. The airfield was home to the No5 Maintenance Unit from 1938 and by the end of 1939 over 600 aircraft were based here in Kemble. The fleet included Tiger Moths just like the one you will be flying in today over the gorgeous corner of Gloucestershire. In those days it was young trainee fighter pilots who took to the skies above the Cotswolds to learn their craft - now it's you! This operator has a trio of lovingly restored Moths in their collection. Charged with the enviable task of flying these historic aircraft is a team of highly skilled pilots. They've all got oodles experience from flying modern jet fighters and air liners around the world to taking delicate warbirds out to fly-ins and air displays. No matter how many modern and classic planes they've flown amongst them all agree that 'nothing puts a smile on a customer's face quite like a ride in the iconic Tiger Moth'. We can't say fairer than that! Indeed it's amazing to think how much these beloved biplanes contributed in creating wartime heroes setting those courageous young pilots on the path to being ace fighter pilots. Prepare for proper open cockpit flying when you take off on a Stearman flight! The Stearman biplane has a long history as a military trainer aircraft and even today it's still an absolute delight to fly in a Stearman. We are offering rides ranging from 20 minutes through to a whole hour taking off from this delightful private airfield on the Dorset/Wiltshire border. This particular Stearman was born in the US of A in 1940. Working as a military trainer for the US Air Force and later the US Navy she certainly served her time helping young pilots gain their wings. Boeing N2S-5 Kaydet (E75) to give the Stearman it's full American name became G-AZLE in late 1971 and since then has enjoyed flying in the skies over the UK. Despite her civilian life G-AZLE with military serial number 75-8543 is still resplendent in her US Navy training colours. That canary yellow and sky blue combination she sports is definitely striking so there's no missing this Stearman in flight that's for sure! All Stearman biplane rides start on the ground in the vintage-styled briefing room. You'll get kitted out in a genuine flight suit chat about safety procedures and what to expect on your flight and also chat a little about flight path planning. On the shorter flight durations you'll be flying the local area but on the longer ones you can explore further afield to the Jurassic Coast and even the Isle of Wight - with superb open cockpit views guaranteed. A nice touch at Compton Abbas set this Stearman flight experience apart from others. Friends and family are invited to join the briefing and they can then observe from the terrace as you climb into the cockpit of the plane. And of course they can all wave enthusiastically as you take off too.
What could be more befitting than flying a Tiger Moth plane at the historic home of the Tiger Club! Your experience takes place at Redhill Aerodrome and back in the heyday of civilian flying this airport played a very pivotal role in the flying of Tiger Moths. This airstrip in Surrey was the base of the famous Tiger Club between 1959 and 1990 where pilots honed their aerobatic and formation flying skills to put on impressive displays to wow the crowds all around the country as well as starting air racing competitions. Nothing quiet so daredevil today in your vintage Tiger Moth but on longer plane flights you might be able to (easily) persuade the pilot to pull a couple of moves! The Tiger Moth plane you'll be flying in is G-AKUE one of the rare Portuguese-built DeHavilland Tiger Moths. Painted up in a rather fetching dark blue with red and white fuselage stripes this very handsome Tiger Moth dates back to 1939. The plane is well-travelled with stints in Mozambique and Northern Rhodesia where she was known as 'Nokomis' (daughter of the moon) and worked as a general transport provider before somehow heading to the plains of Surrey. This DH82a version of the Tiger Moth is a delightful plane to fly and for all these experiences you'll be kitted out in authentic flying jacket and aviator helmet for a truly nostalgic flight. We are offering various flight durations so there is something to suit every budget from a 15 minute taster to get a feel for what it's like to be in an open cockpit plane to a full 40 minute flight where you'll get great views of the Kent and Surrey countryside. If you buy this experience for any aviation fan we are sure just the fact that they can get up close to a Tiger Moth plane is a thrill in itself let alone actually taking off in one and then even having a go at the controls.
