The original reserve areas secured for elephants are now often too small for the number of resident elephants. The PTES's emergency work at the Mayurjharna Elephant Reserve in India for example revolves around mapping routes that the elephants use for migration. That means the seasonal movements of these magnificent mammals can be charted enabling the PTES researchers to work with communities to advise on where & when to plant crops. Rev the engines & get ready for your adrenaline rally in Northamptonshire! The idea of this course is that you get down to the nitty-gritty of rallying by learning each individual technique in a series of mini workshops taking it in turns as part of a group. Each of your three driving sessions takes place in a different area of the rally school. Each one has been created to provide the perfect set up for learning the particular skills you'll be concentrating on. In the paddock you've got plenty of room to fling the car around & practice those handbrakes turns. It might look easy but it actually takes a fair amount of co-ordination between what your hands & feet are doing. Over in the power slide area you'll be learning how to grapple with oversteer on a beautifully-formed corner. It's a 200m arc with the ideal angles for getting your car to slide gracefully around. No doubt you'll have a couple of missed attempts where you over or even under cook it but hopefully by the end of your turn you'll have nailed it! The skid pan is where you learn your figure of eights & doughnuts. These crowd-pleaser moves get the adrenaline going as you throw your rally car around this Northamptonshire pan. Again it's tricky to smoothly execute the moves but you'll be getting in-car training from some of the best (and most patient) instructors out there. As for the car you'll be learning these rally moves in you can't get much more seminal than the Subaru Impreza. They are the real workhorses of this rally school. They don't mind how many stalls or spins out you have these iconic cars just keep on going. Sure they're not the latest generation of rally car but they are certainly one of the best to drive even years after their WRC heyday. Fancy flying some daredevil aerobatics in Upminster? Now you can with these aerobatics lessons out of Damyns Hall near London with the famous Tiger Club. You'll be taking to the sky (and turning it upside down) in a powerful CAP10 stunt plane with a seasoned aerobatics pilot at the helm. This Damyns Hall club has a bit of history when it comes to aerobatic flying. In fact back in the day it was pretty much responsible for bringing sport & stunt flying to the fore in the UK. Club members would bring in brand new aerobatics planes never seen before in this country flying them in ways never thought possible. The team was even instrumental in introducing Formula One air racing. So as you can probably tell this lot rather like flying tricks in the air. What's more they're rather good at it too. It's time to go spinning in the skies when you fly aerobatics at Coventry Airport! This is your chance to experience what it's like to fly some fine aerial tricks over the midlands with a fully licensed pilot instructor by your side
- it'll take your breathe away for sure! Coventry is a great place to learn aerobatics as it's a proper airport with business jets & cargo flights. It boasts all the facilities (including an impressive tarmac runway) without all the airspace restrictions or the hustle & bustle of a busy passenger terminal. That means you have all the sky to play with. The aeroplane you'll be going up in is a funky little Avions Pierre Robin R2160. French designed & built these aircraft are quite rare in the UK but they are fully aerobatic to +6 & -3g which is perfectly adequate to give the novice trickster a thrill. When you walk out to the plane you'll have to admit the dark blue & gold livery is rather swish & highly appropriate for whizzing over the Coventry countryside pulling some moves. Climbing into the cockpit (which can only be described as 'snug'!) you'll sit side by side with your instructor. In front of each of you there's a stick control & a load of levers gauges & dials. Your pilot will explain the main instruments & controls whilst you are sitting on the apron then it's time to get permission from the Coventry air traffic control & then get ready for your initiation into aerobatics. Sliding the bubble canopy into place you'll instantly realise that it gives you a superb all round view. It's another advantage of this little Gallic plane after all it's quite useful to be able to see what you're doing when you're literally in a spin! We are offering a 30-minute introduction to aerobatics at Coventry & an ultimate 40-minute flight. The first will give you a taste of what flying aerobatics is like & the second will run you through a full series of aerial manoeuvres like a proper display flight. Both are pretytyy hair raising & we dare you to look down when you're at the crest of your loop the loop
