You won’t just be driving any 4x 4 in Northumberland you’ll be driving an ex-Royal Engineers Land Rover Tithonus! This genuine ex-Army Land Rover is seriously cool. About as rugged as you can get these off roaders will drive pretty much anywhere & everywhere with ease
- as you’ll find out when you get to drive one near Morpeth.
To the untrained eye the Land Rover Tithonus looks just like any other military Land Rover Defender. The British Government financed project Tithonus in the mid-2000s with the aim of prolonging the life of Army Land Rovers from 20 to 30 years by restoring them & making several enhancements to the vehicles.
The changes that are clearly visible include a complete respray of the body the addition of checkered panelling on the bonnet & sills as well as the fitting of Wolf wheels. A lot of time & effort went into roll cages too with exterior ones added around the doors & windscreen a full roll cage inside behind the front seats & around the hard-top cab too.
Notoriously uncomfortable & basic on the interior you’ll discover the Tithonus versions boast upgraded driver & front passenger seats (and the removal of the ‘jump seat’ in between the two of them) as well as enhanced bench seating in the back for the troops. They even added special matting which dramatically cut down on noise & rattles inside the Landy.
Under the bonnet the 2.5l diesel normally aspirated engine was reconditioned with an enormous alternator added. They keep their five-speed transmission with low & high gears & permanent four wheel drive. Perfect for tackling everything this Northumberland off road driving course can throw at you.
And indeed with the Land Rover Tithonus you’ve got the vehicle for the job but can you as driver handle the terrain? Start gently with the low sections of the course. Progress nicely onto the medium route & once you’ve cracked that take a deep breath & head to the high course. Go get those 45 degree drops & deep water splashes in this ex Army Landy & prove this is the 4x 4 for Northumberland!
