Meet handle & fly birds of prey in Scotland! The Scottish countryside has to be one of the finest backdrops for any falconry day. This centre near Cupar has gone one further in the ‘most picturesque setting’ stakes as it takes place at the Scottish Deer Centre
- one of the Fife region’s most visited tourist attractions.
With several decades of experience rearing training & flying birds of prey this raptor world is Scotland’s longest established demonstration & flying centre. Ever since 1993 the birds & their falconers have been wowing the visitors to this deer park. Your experience gives you the chance to go ‘behind the scenes’ as it were & see what the work of a falconer involves.
And as they say here it’ll go from nose to beak then beak & beyond. Having meet both the human & feathered members of this Scottish team there is plenty of time to visit the aviaries & have a go at flying birds of prey to your gloved hand in the centre’s flying arena. & if you’ve never done anything like this before it can be quite a nerve-wracking moment the first time you wait for the raptor to land
- but staff are reassuring & the birds are surprisingly gentle considering those impressive claws!
Having done the nose to beak bit it’s time to go beyond with a Hawk walk. The likes of Squeak & Orkney the Harris Hawks are certainly the stars of the show here in Scotl&. They nothing more than to lead you off into the woodlands as they duck & dive in & around the trees in a display of sheer flying skill. Once again it’s pretty amazing to see as they keep an eye on where you are & regularly come swooping back in for an irresistible titbit from your glove.
