Whether you step up onto the wing for charity or just for the sheer pleasure of doing something this mad these wing walking experiences will literally take your breath away. You will be taking to the skies to 'walk' the wing of a biplane at Wickenby Airfield in Lincolnshire. These events are operated by specialists as offering wing walking to the general public (and indeed going wing walking for charity) is so regulated. Indeed it's not everywhere in the country you'll find such an activity so if you're in the Lincolnshire East Midlands/ Midlands & South Yorkshire areas this small airfield midway between Lincoln & Louth is perfectly placed for your first foray into wing walking. Indeed Wickenby is a lovely place for your wing walking display. The original 1940s control tower is still standing & very much in use as a museum & brilliant little cafe. This is your chance to become a wing walker for the day! Treat the adventurer in your life to an intensive training session in preparation to then walk the wing on a thrilling flight out of Chiltern Park Aerodrome situated between Oxford & Reading. This wing walk display really is one of those 'once in a lifetime' experiences that is guaranteed to get the adrenaline flowing as you climb up onto the wing of the biplane for this unique aerial ride. Why walk on land when you can walk on the wing? The ultimate aim of this day is to turn you from budding top-wing riders into proficient wing walkers capable of taking part in a 10-minute aerial display. We're guessing this is the first time you'll have attempted a wing walk so the experience starts with a full safety briefing on the ground. You might not be expecting this but as well as the usual safety procedures it will include things like breathing techniques & hand signals all very much specific to the art of being a wing walker. The wing walking team at Chiltern Park has had the special wing rig manufactured 'made to measure' for the Boeing Stearman plane you'll be flying on. Once you the budding wing walk star has climbed up onto the top wing which is about 10ft off the ground you'll be strapped in with a super-secure five point harness. When comfortable & after one last run through of what you need to do you'll be taxiing off ready for the personal wing walk air display of your life. / As you feel the wind in your face you'll be flying at speeds of up to 135mph & it's at this point that you can officially declare yourself as a wing walker. Most wing walkers are so exhilarated in flight that they can't help grinning madly & waving at friends & family below. Keep your wits about you as you zoom in for a fly past at just 500ft off the ground & pull up for a sharp climb before heading into the finale
- a classic manoeuvre the 'run & break'. One thing's for sure you're not going to forget the day you became a fully-fledged wing walker!

Product Description

Get to know the character behind the great man on these Winston Churchill tours! There’s no doubting Sir Winston Churchill is one of the most significant people in the history of this country. Join a Winston Churchill walking tour of London & in two hours you’ll discover there was a lot more to Churchill than rousing ‘fighting them on the beaches’ speeches.

The starting point for your Churchill tour around London is Westminster tube station. Your knowledgeable host will show you Winston’s London from the point of view of his personal life & his political career. You’ll see the church where he married his darling Clementine in 1908 & discover one of his favourite dining spots. He was a keen painter too so it’s highly appropriate to pop in to the National Portrait Gallery to see Churchill’s portrait proudly hanging there.

As for his political career well it wasn’t without controversy. As the highly-acclaimed multi-award winning 2018 film ‘ Darkest Hour’ shows on Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s resignation Churchill was not the first choice of successor & your Winston Churchill tour host will reveal why.  However as the country tried to unite with a coalition government including Chamberlain & Halifax PM Winston Churchill was acutely aware of the threat from the Germany Army already on the march in mainland Europe…

By May 1940 Churchill was holding cabinet meetings in the War Rooms the subterranean offices under the Treasury that feature on this Winston Churchill walking tour. In total 115 were held & whilst the Blitz bombing raged overhead the Map Room was staffed 24 hours a day. The Cabinet Room became the HQ of Churchill’s war campaign with an office-cum-bedroom for the PM & even a Transatlantic Telephone Room with a direct line to President Roosevelt.

The Cabinet War Rooms is where your Winston Churchill tour concludes. During the walk you will have found out all about Churchill the man his military career prior to becoming PM (he was First Lord of the Admiralty during the First World War) & life as the Prime Minister who guided the country through the Second World War. Fascinating stuff & so much more fun than history at school ever was!
