A superb medium to full bodied, rich, ripe Gigondas from this historic estate founded by Eugene Raspail who even hd a boulevard named after him (boulevard Raspail). The wine is now made by the highly talented Christian Meffre.
Colour: the wine is very deep violet, almost black in the glass Nose had a nice freshness to it, in part because the wine is fairly young but also because the 2009 vintage is such a stand out. Palate: this Gigondas has subtle earthiness & a hint of pepper. it's not too heavy, lots of dark fruit & plum flavours; a chalky pepper on the finish. Fantastically well-balanced wine. Gigondas is locetad in the Rhone Village in France & is highly reputed for its wines from Roman times. The best wines just like this one are remarkably similar to good Chateauneuf-du-Pape, & like them, made from the Grenache grape with Syrah & Mourvedre grapes. Chateau Raspail Gigondas was made from 60% Grenache 30% Syrah & 10% Mourvedre grapes. This wine goes very well with robust dishes as beef stroganoff, stews or even spare ribs. Also fantastic with hard cheeses.
