Edible hazel nuts (which can also be medicinal) are the end result of Corylus avellana Red Majestic, an upright, medium-sized shrub. It has twisted branches bearing heart-shaped, wrinkled-toothed leaves which are bright red-violet in spring turning red-flushed, green in summer. The bare stems in winter produce violet-red catkins on bare stems which are followed by red nuts the following autumn. To get the most hazel nuts in any year it is best to plant in moist, free-draining alkaline soil in full sun or partial shade & grow as a bush. The soil should be kept clear in a 60cm radius around the trunk. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. Flowers February-March. Height 250-300cm. Supplied in a 3-4 litre pot.
