Edible hazel nuts (which can also be medicinal) are the end result of Corylus avellana Red Majestic, an upright, medium-sized shrub. It has twisted branches bearing heart-shaped, wrinkled-toothed leaves which are bright red-violet in spring turning red-flushed, green in summer. The bare stems in winter produce violet-red catkins on bare stems which are followed by red nuts the following autumn. To get the most hazel nuts in any year it is best to plant in moist, free-draining alkaline soil in full sun or partial shade & grow as a bush. The soil should be kept clear in a 60cm radius around the trunk. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. Flowers February-March. Height 250-300cm. Supplied in a 3-4 litre pot. ...

Hazel is a native species with large, furry, green leaves. It displays delightful, dancing catkins in summer & hazelnuts (which the squirrels will get before you) in autumn. The stems are flexible & very useful in the vegetable garden as pea or bean stakes. We include Hazel in our discounted mixed native hedging packs
- but if you're choosing your very own selection we would encourage you to include some of these plants for their wildlife qualities. Flowers mid September-late November. Grows 30-60cm per year. Supplied in 2 litre pots. Potted Plants are a more developed plant as their root systems are not disturbed during the lifting & planting process. They can be planted year round & if necessary can be left in their pots for several weeks before planting if you are unsure as to when you will be able to get round to doing the work; all they need is a little water to keep them happy. As more mature plants you dont need quite as many per metre as the bare root plants (normally 3 to 5 would suffice depending on how dense you require your hedge & how quickly you need it to look established). Pots are a great way to create a new hedge effect more quickly.
