The latest release out of the Bruichladdich distillery is the Port Charlotte PC10. The 5th edition in this fantastic peated series, it is labelled with the slogan “ Tro Na Linntean” which means “through the generations”, as this whisky is dedicated to the future of the Bruichladdich distillery & the young men & women who are working their way through the ranks there. This is the first time that Bruichladdich can release an age statement on their Port Charlotte range, as this batch has been soaking up the ozone rich marine air for 10 years in Bruichladdich's Islay warehouse. This is a limited edition bottle in the series with only 6000 bottles being released, each one is individually numbered, non chill filtered & colouring free. The colour of the PC10 is an appealing bronze mahogany. On the nose, you first detect the sherry & peat, taking your mind to the shores of Islay with a little scent of lemon peel, back pepper, eucalyptus, cinnamon, heather & mint. All of these aromas are caressed & cooled by the coastal notes from the Atlantic, which merge superbly with the earthy flora & fauna aromatics of the peat moors, heaths & woodlands. On the palate you get a real flavour of the wood casks the whisky was aged in, the combination of both bourbon & sherry wood arrives in unhurried waves of sticky dates, mellow oloroso, chocolate orange, smoked malt, roasted walnut & dark toffee. On the finish, you notice a subtle change in the flavours, from the American bourbon wood which is evident throughout the tasting, to a finish of Spanish flair, exploding on the back of the throat with dark, sweet & passionate flavours all coming alive to give the PC10 a goodbye party to be remembered.
