The Bruichladdich distillery is owned by the 3 Harvey brothers who built the distillery in 1881. The Harvey family has over a century of whisky distilling ownership in their family. The three brothers have a strong belief that the whisky industry has been stifled by industrialisation & self-interest. Companies now days try & do things the quickest way possible but at Bruichladdich they believe that taking time & using authentic equipment is the best way to make their single malts. The single malts are made from Scottish barley & when it comes to maturing the single malts, the boys at Bruichladdich use a variety of different wooded casks. These perform the vital task of allowing the evolution of the spirit by way of subtle & complex interactions between the micro-oxidation of the whiskies flavour compounds. Oak tannins extracted from the wood, the ozone-marine influence of the air absorbed through the wood & the whisky texture. This is the fourth instalment in the Port Charlotte series & aged for 8 years. The colour is described as a chartreuse sunset with its light amber tint. On the nose you get an updraft of sea spray & peat smoke greets you with spicy pepper & lemon aromas all exploding simultaneously. Notes follow of heather & myrtle combated by oak & malted barley burst. On the palate it is viscous, rich & oily. Peat fire flavours & the mellow rich taste of sweet oaky Demerara sugar toddy instantaneously erupt on the tongue. The finish is likely to leave you feeling as macho a man could ever be, with the power of this spirit reaching deep into your taste buds.
