The root of Stones Original Ginger wine dates back to 1740 when a company called the Finsbury Distilling Company was founded in the city of London. During this era the drinks business was booming & distilleries were flourishing across London. There was widespread drunkenness & it was beginning to cause concern & in 1751 an act was passed to prohibit the selling of alcohol direct from distillers to the public. Finsbury distilling company needed to get a retailer & they chose Joseph Stones, a green grocer in Holborn.
