You will be flying out of Sandhill Farm airfield for these Firefly experiences. It’s a discrete & friendly little airfield tucked in amongst the fields & farms around Shrivenham. Being just north-east of Swindon centre on the A420 it’s easy to get to from Oxfordshire & neighbouring Wiltshire too.
You will be flying over the countryside around Swindon in a Slingsby Firefly which is a bit of a gem for aviation fans. It’s a very capable two-seater aerobatic training aircraft that first flew in 1974 used by the RAF from 1995 to 2010 & much-loved by all.
Indeed the plane’s RAF trainer yellow livery & distinctive G-HONG registration is a nod to this Firefly’s story. Originally flown by the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force as a Police search & rescue support aircraft she returned to the UK when the unit disbanded. After a stint with the RAF she is now the star of the show at this airfield just outside Swindon.
And we must mention this Firefly is actually a T67 M200 version which is particularly rare as only 26 were ever built. She comes equipped with a more powerful 200bhp single engine & inverted fuel & oil systems - just what you need for performing aerobatics & that’s exactly what you’ll be doing on these thrilling experiences!

What goes up must come down landings are a crucial part of any flight! This is the thrilling aeroplane landing challenge & it takes place at Coventry Airport. With the help & assistance of a fully-qualified instructor pilot you will be landing an actual light aircraft for real! Your experience starts on the ground with a briefing followed by time in the flight simulator. You'll be concentrating on approaches & landings so you can get used to the procedures of coming in to l&. & of course your instructor will be by your side in the sim teaching you what you need to know to be able to touch down in the aeroplane. Things then start to get very real when you walk out to the light aircraft on the apron. Once your instructor pilot has handled take off you'll be able to fly the rectangular training circuit that takes you over & around Coventry Airport. This cruising time in the air gives your tutor plenty of time to assess whether you'll be able to handle the landing challenge. With the OK from the pilot you will be hands on the controls setting up your nice & steady approach into Coventry Airport. Your expert pilot instructor is keeping a hand on the controls at all times so if you lose concentration or feel uneasy they will be right on it & will take over. Coming in at the right height controlling the pitch of the nose & getting yourself positioned on the centre-line of the runway it's multitasking at its maddest when you are trying to land a plane for the very first time in your life! Our advice? Just keep calm & keep flying. Would you be able to do this if you were a passenger in a light aircraft & the pilot was incapacitated? Sure it's the stuff of films but this aeroplane challenge brings all that adrenaline rush to life as you execute your first landing as the pilot of a small aircraft.
