It was a hugely popular if rather bland family saloon from Ford that was a big seller. Ford executive Walter Hayes saw great potential in the Cortina & looked to Lotus's Colin Chapman to transform the car into a racing icon. Colin did good. He took on an ordinary family saloon & turned it into something extraordinary. He then gave it to racing driver Jim Clark. Jim won the British Saloon Car Championships in 1963 in his first season driving the Mk I Lotus Cortina. The car became an icon of the motorsport world & received rave reviews.
