1978 vintage from the 2011 Diageo Special Releases, the oldest bottling of Brora from the series. Just 1, 500 bottles. Brora Brora Distillery is situated in the north east of Scotland close to the Sutherland coast on the edge of Brora. Established in 1819 as Clynelish Distillery by the Marquis of Sutherland to produce fine Highland malt whisky & re-named Brora Distillery in 1975. Brora Distillery is an iconic Scottish malt distillery with a round red brick chimney, malt kiln with pagoda roof, a bellcote topped with a gilded weather cock, two big wooden worm tubs, miniscule gauger’s house, two wee copper stills & wonderful old dunnage warehouses. Brora Distillery closed in 1983 & is unlikely to re-open & so is a lost Scottish malt whisky distillery. No tasting notes at present. ...

The Laddie Ten. The historic first 10 year old bottled on 11th September 2011, ten years after the distillery re-opended. A landmark bottling of unpeated Islay single malt. Bruichladdich Bruichladdich Distillery was established in 1881 on the Rhinns peninsular on the island of Islay close by the sandy bays of Loch Indaal. Re-opened in 2001 with much of the original Victorian equipment restored to working order. The first release of Bruichladdich’s new whisky was the highly acclaimed PC5, the first release in the limited Port Charlotte range. Also producing very highly peated Octamore, Organic using Islay grown barley, & triple & quadruple distilled single malts. The Bruichladdich distillery visitor centre offers distillery tours including the bottling hall & the distillery participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Whisky Festival. Nose: Precursor to the flavours you will find on the palate: first, a combination of honey & a zing of fresh lemon. Then fresh, estery air bubbles of banana, , apricot, peach & ripe cantaloupe melon. The backdrop is a hint of the warm, ocean breeze blowing over the sand dunes & shore meadows alive with the waft of wild flowers
- Hebridean harmonisation. Given time, & a splash of spring water, the sweet oak brings light vanilla with a hint of nutty chocolate, with the crispness of warm, crusty, freshly baked bread. Palate: The mellow, oak sweetness is welcoming as are hints of bourbon & gingerbread, sherry & sultanas; & as they move on, there are the lighter, icing sugar-coated fruits. It’s fresh & frictionless, the texture of warm honey
- then dry, crispy, malt barley; together with the oak they merge beautifully to cradle the lighter flavours, adding the strong pulse to our long awaited Laddie! Finish: It’s exceptionally long for a 10 year old thanks to the natural oils from the malted barley still in the spirit. This is critical for the mouth feel & aftertaste, it begs the question – why do distillers remove the very essence of the spirit?
