Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. Granted its DOCG classification in 1980, it is considered one of the finest & longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines & the wine of kings'. Until the mid-1800s Barolo wines were sweet, containing a substantial quantity of residual sugar, but their modern form is unquestionably dry & decidedly tannic. It is a Barolo of tremendous balance from start to finish. One senses in the nose that the grapes ripened completely & fully, resulting in an explosion of power in the concentrated fruit & spice of the nose. The intense creamy fruit anticipates the rich & balanced mouthfeel. The dense texture of the very sweet tannins is in perfect balance with the firmness of the fruit & acid. The wine finishes with length & persistence & has great aging potential.
