Intense gold with persistent fine mousse. The nose opens with floral rose notes & warms to toasted brioche. The mouth is full & fresh with spicy floral notes (wallflower or nasturtium), underpinned with candied yellow fruit. The finish is long & dry. This is a classy mid-term vintage from Pol Roger that will continue to improve for at least 5 years in bottle & in magnum for 10-12 years. Typically this has the power to match fine dining & would work well with lobster or other crustaceans as well as rich or pungent or spicy dishes. Vintage champagne is by definition the wine of a single year & it must rely on the success of that harvest alone. Vintage champagne is therefore produced only when all the necessary components of climate, grape quality & ripeness at harvest come together for the winemaker to produce a wine of optimum intensity, structure & balance. The growing season of 1999 was marked by exceptional warmth & rain, with some heavy hail in May which devastated the vines in some communes. Growth was vigorous, necessitating some green pruning. The grapes were in good condition at harvest time which opened on 19th September & closed 1st October. Fortunately the heavy rain which fell at times during this period did not spoil a record harvest (19, 000 kg/ha) with a good maturity (9.9% vol). Made in limited quantity, the 1999 Brut Vintage follows the traditional Pol Roger formula of 60% Pinot Noir & 40% Chardonnay from up to 20 Grand & Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, the Grand Vallee de la Marne & the Cote des Blancs. The musts underwent 2 cold settlings before fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the fruit characteristics of the wine. The wine was then blended & transferred to bottle for its second fermentation & aging in the cellars. Grape: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. ...

The wine displays a mid golden yellow colour & continuous stream of delicate bubbles. An elegant & powerful nose with toasted brioche over fresh quince, peach & apricot with an underlying floral character & high toned cinnamon spice with hints of lime leaf. A balanced palate with weight, power, a velvety texture & a long persistent pure acidity. With weight & complexity characteristic both of the terroir & vintage. A long aftertaste with a light touch of citric acidity bringing together a wine of undeniable majesty. Already drinking well now & will continue to improve over the medium term. The year of the millenium provided plenty of challenges for the vigneron. A warm midwinter & early spring was interspersed with hailstorms. May was dry, but in July there was severe hail. Thankfully finne weather returned in August & it remained warm & dry to the end of the harvest. The potential degree was satisfactory, total acidity average to low & p Hs fairly high. The tartaric acid content of the must was the lowest since 1970. The clear wines were very good to taste. Churchill's relationship with Pol Roger dates back to 1945, although he had been a loyal customer as far back as 1908. At a luncheon given by the British ambassador to France after the liberation of Paris, Churchill met the charming & captivating Odette Pol-Roger & began a friendship, indulged by his wife Clementine, which lasted until Sir Winston's death in 1965. Each year on his birthday, Odette would send him a case of vintage champagne. In honour of his friendship, Churchill named one of his favourite racehorses after her, & made sure that she was invited to lunch at the British embassy every time he was in Paris. Despite never actually visiting 44 Avenue de Champagne, Churchill proclaimed it 'the most drinkable address in the world'. So close was his relationship with the family that, on Churchill's death, Pol Roger put black-bordered labels on the bottles destined for the UK. In 1975, Pol Roger went one step further & named their prestige cuvee after him, making it in the robust, mature style that he liked so much. ...

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuve in homage to Sir Winston Churchill mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne: robustness, a full-bodied character & relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated: My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best. Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth & robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse & subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Crus Pinot Noir & Chardonnay vineyards which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime. Cuve Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages & is always released later than the other vintage dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines. The wine has an inviting, bright golden hue, & a fine, regular stream of bubbles. At first the refined nose exudes subtle hints of brioche & sweet spice combining with citrus flavours & floral fragrances. As the wine warms in the glass, it becomes more powerful & the nose develops complex nuances of toasted nuts, acacia blossom & honeycomb. The palate is round & creamy supported by notes of fresh fruit. The structure is opulent, underpinned by fabulous balance. The finish is long & powerful. ...

What makes Rich NV different from Brut Reserve is the increased dosage of 34 g/l of sugar which makes it the perfect drink for occasions when something a little less dry is called for. The nose opens with beguiling hints of beeswax & apricot which are repeated on the palate & reinforced with notes of acacia honey. Despite the sweetness it is remarkably refreshing & the acidity cuts right through the heart of the champagne leaving the palate cleansed. This would be the perfect toast to serve with wedding cake but equally it complements tarts & crumbles. Rich NV is a precise replica of Brut Reserve NV being blended from 30 still base wines from different vineyards, different vintages & the three main grape varieties which dominate the champagne region: Pinot Noir contributes body, depth of character & life-extending tannins & comes from the villages of the Montagne de Reims
- Verzy, Verzenay, Mailly, Ambonnay, Mardeuil & Louvois; Chardonnay provides the lightness, elegance & finesse & is drawn from Epernay itself & the villages of the Cote des Blancs
- Cuis, Oiry, Oger, Vertus, Moussy & Chouilly; Pinot Meunier supplies youthful freshness, vigour & plump character with the grapes coming from the Vallee d' Epernay
- Vincelles, Venteuil, Troissy, Damery, Vandieres, Brugny, Chavot, Monthelon & Pierry. Grape: 33% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Meunier.

Pol Roger - Pure Brut 75cl Bottle

A new addition to complete the Pol Roger range of champagnes, this cuvee is above all an exercise in the House style, seeking to craft a wine in its most natural state without the addition of any sweetening dosage. An expression of the diversity of terroirs, this non vintage champagne is born of the perfect balance of the three traditional regional grape varieties, blended in equal proportion. Pol Roger carefully selected reserve wines drawn across at least three years to gain the right balance of flavour and structure necessary for an undosed Champagne. The colour is a dense gold with a fine mousse. The fresh and lively nose expresses a fine, complex register of cloves and roses, developing into hints of breadcrumbs, yeast and citrus fruit. The wine is clean and crisp in the mouth,
surprisingly so after such a mature, concentrated nose: fine and well structured with aromas of honey and cloves. This gives the wine extra depth and contributes to its good length. A svelte and shapely wine. Its inherent freshness combined with mature and concentrated bouquet makes it particularly suited to shellfish, crayfish and seafood in general. Grape: 33% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Meunier.
