La Grande Dame 2008 has a surprising glint of light gold colour. Initially, it reveals a strong attack, both aerial & delicate. Upon being released it presents notes of dried fruits (almonds, figs, apricots), ripe white fruits (pears), & finally, subtle toasted notes of hazelnut & praline. The luscious pastry notes are well balanced with the blends freshness & clarity. The attack is strong & sharp. La Grande Dame 2008 bestows a silky texture upon young fruits, carried by citrus & red fruit (cherry) notes. ...

Limited stock, changing to 2006 vintage soon. An extremely cold winter, with snow on the Montagne de Reims, gave way to an unexpected warm spell with moderate rain showers. A little frost was noted in the most vulnerable areas. Spring was early & wet, while May was particularly hot & dry. Rain at the end of June did not affect flowering, which took place under excellent, nearly heat wave, conditions. Rain & hot weather alternated at the beginning of summer, encouraging the vines to grow rapidly. August was dry & sunny, perfect for ripening the grapes. After a grey & cloudy two weeks at the beginning of September, the weather turned, providing the ideal dry climate to harvest the grapes, which were in superb condition. The basic blend is made up of 64% Pinot Noir grapes from the Grands Crus at Ay, in the Vallee de la Marne, & at Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay & Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims. The blend also

36% Chardonnay grapes from three Grands Crus: Avize, Oger & Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Cote des Blancs. La Grande Dame 1998 has a pale gold colour with jade glints. The wine is crystal clear, with unbelievably fine bubbles. On the first nose, typical Chardonnay characteristics come to the fore, with the arrival of floral & mineral aromas (acacia, ferns, chalk). By agitating the wine, scents of candied fruit (citrusfruits, apricots, quince) & sweet almond emerge, to reappear later in the mouth. After rotating the wine for a few minutes more, rare notes such as peaty malt, tobacco & delicate herbs, are gradually unveiled. This aromatic, impressively complex bouquet is confirmed in the mouth. On the palate, the wine is clear-cut & pure, perfectly balanced with a delightful silky smoothness. La Grande Dame 1998, with its lacelike construction, has a long, lively, & structured finish. This wine has unbelievable ageing potential. The 1998 vintage of La Grande Dame, the quintessence of the Veuve Clic style, reaches a peak of refinement, without losing its legendary strength produced by a blend including nearly two-thirds of Pinot Noir.

In the history of Champagne, wines that were blended for greater sweetness were customarily described as Rich. In Russia, consumers would add sugar to their champagne, thus adding a personal touch to their wine. The Rich blend is comprised of Pinot Noir (45%), the main pillar of Veuve Clicquots winemaking, which gives the champagne its fundamental structure. The large part of Meunier (40%) provides roundness to the blend & Chardonnay (15%) completes it with extra freshness. For Rich Ros, the blend is completed with 15% Pinot Noir red wine. Richs uniqueness is in its dosage of 60 g/L, which enhances the blends aromas. As Veuve Clicquots Cellar Master shares, Sugar in champagne is like spices in a recipe: used correctly it can bring out specific aromas & play with flavors. ...

Appearance: Clear, brilliant, gold colour lights. Persistent & remarkable effervescence. Nose: Delicate hints of toasted notes. Lightly candied citrus fruit. Dried fruits (apricots). The bold, lively, & pure flavour transforms into a powerful, structured palate, delicately chiselled from the minerality of Champagne's chalky terroir. True to the structure of Veuve Clic Wines, the Demi-Sec is blended largely from Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier. The blend is completed by about a quarter of Chardonnay & 15-25% of reserve wines. A higher dosage gives it richer notes detracting from its freshness. A beautiful yellow colour with deep golden glints, & fine, even mousse. An intense fragrance reminiscent of ripe fruit (candied citrus fruit, fruit liqueurs) with notes of brioche & toast. Round & mellow in the mouth, with mild acidity maintaining a pleasant silkiness. The practice of decanting this wine, which dates to Madam Clicquot's time, makes it even more delectable. The Demi-Sec is at its best with desserts. Pastries & desserts based on fresh fruit, citrus & dried fruit will lend delightfully with the wine's smooth qualities. ...

A Champagne House is eventually judged on the quality of its Brut Non Vintage. It is in the making of such a wine that the true Art of Champagne blending reveals itself. This is an art in which the House of Veuve Clic excels. Our Brut Yellow Label reflects the superb vineyards we own & the consistent nature of our House style. The predominance of Pinot Noir provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, while a touch of Pinot Meunier rounds out the blend. Chardonnay adds the elegance & finesse essential in a perfectly balanced wine. Grapes from as many as 50 to 60 different Crus go to the blending of Yellow Label. Traditionally, the proportion of each grape variety used is: 50 to 55% Pinot Noir
- 15 to 20% Pinot Meunier
- 28 to 33% Chardonnay. These figures vary slightly from year to year according to conditions. The Chef de Caves has to achieve the total consistency of taste, which makes Yellow Label so immediately recognisable, so utterly reliable both in terms of quality, colour & bouquet. He will draw on priceless Reserve wines for the blend: from 25 to 35%, sometimes as much as 40% to ensure the continuity of the House style. Each of these older wines
- perhaps 9 years old
- is kept separately to preserve the unique qualities of the vineyard & the vintage. First, Yellow Label looks beautiful: golden-yellow, with a foaming necklace of tiny bubbles. Next it is so pleasing to the nose: initially reminiscent of white fruits & raisins, then of vanilla & later of brioche. Note the fine balance between the fruity aromas coming from the grape varieties & the toasty aromas following the ageing in the bottle. The first sip delivers all the freshness & forcefulness so typical of Yellow Label with a symphony of fruit tastes following on. Here is a true member of the powerful Brut family, well structured, admirably vinous. The lingering aromas echo & re-echo, with each fruit or spice note distinct. Veuve Clic Yellow Label manages to reconcile two opposing factors
- forcefulness & finesse
- & to hold them in perfect balance. This consistent power to please makes it absolutely ideal as an aperitif, & perfect as the Champagne to enjoy with a meal.
