After a minimum of 10 years in ex-bourbon casks, the whisky of the Nectar D' Or is then taken out & extra matured in specially hand selected Sauternes wine barrels. Sauternes is the most famous & ancient sweet wine growing region of France, that helps this whisky develop its rich, spicy & dessert-like flavours. The whisky is a honeyed gold colour with aromas of lime & orange rind, sultanas & dates give fruity flavour laced with tantalising spices of nutmeg. On the palate this whisky has flavours of ginger, nutmeg & toasted almonds, bringing a deep warming taste interwoven with a syrupy lemon meringue & honeycomb middle. Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is the darkest & most intense whisky in the Glenmorangie range that is extra matured. It has been aged a total of 12 years, but as usual with Glenmorangie, they had aged it in two different casks. The first being aged for 10 years in American White Oak cask & then being transferred into specially selected ruby port pipes from the Quintas or wine estates of Portugal. Extra maturation in these port pipes develop Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban into a sunlight rose gold colour with an aroma of dark mint chocolate, tangerines & Seville oranges mingle with sandalwood & walnut before giving way to a spicy finish of pepper & nutmeg. On the palate you detect much more of a port characteristic. The flavours are mint chocolate & walnuts, which lay the foundations for rise, Turkish delight & sweet Seville oranges.
