2007 was a powerful vintage, & Vilafonte’s Series M reflects that with its intensity. Particular characteristics of the vintage were earlier ripening, picking at lower sugars, & lovely ripe tannins. Our Malbec typically has gobs of dark blackberry fruit with fleshy, round tannins. The Merlot adds richer texture while the Cabernet Sauvignon tannins give intensity & structure, working as the foundation for the blend. Cabernet Franc adds nuanced aromatics & helps polish the wine. Rich on the palate from start to finish, the complexity of the flavours of cocoa powder, floral notes & black cherry make this blend a great expression of our estate vineyard site. The wine’s deep color, almost red-black, displays the intensity & ripeness of the grapes in the 2007 harvest. Weather: The 2007 season had cool evenings & mornings, with a normal alternating rhythm of cooler & warmer days. Warm days just before harvest contributed to the intensity of the Merlot in the Series M. Very little rain fell during the last months of ripening. The 2008 vintage started warm but gave way to cooler temperatures in February & March for our harvest, giving us even ripening, acid retention, & fine phenolic ripeness. Volumes were significantly restricted due to variable weather at flowering. The vintage produced the most refined ' Series C' we have made, & is unique in that there is no Cabernet Franc in the blend. The 2008 ' Series C' has aged 24 months, primarily in new French oak barrels & then for 12 months in the bottle. Pre-release tasting shows deep red-black colour, abundant, layered primary fruit & secondary savouryaromas, black currants, Morello cherry preserve, cocoa powder & balsamic. On the palate entry the wine is soft with fruit sweetness. In the mid palate it broadens to reveal flavour intensity & the traditional Series Cstructure. The Vilafonte C is marked by soft polished tannins, well-integrated oak & an elongated finish. Decanting before the meal will provide intensified aromatics. Vilafonte 'C' is made from the most intense, powerful vines from the vineyard; very deep concentrated fruit; a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc with some Malbec/ Merlot to round it out. Vilafonte has a high percentage of restrained new oak which integrates well with the fruit. It has great length. Bright flavours, black fruit & excellent acidity.
