Sandeman's 20 year old Tawny is produced in the traditional port wine method, with all the grapes being hand picked & undergoing stalk removal & crushing before fermentation, under controlled temperatures. Wine alcohol is added but at the precise moment otherwise the port will be unbalanced between body & bouquet. Much like the 10 year old Tawny, the harvested wines stay in the Douro Valley until the following spring when they are taken to V.N. Gaia & enter the Sandeman's centuries-old lodges for ageing in oak wood casks. The final blend consists of carefully chosen wines aged between 15 & 40 years, masterfully combined so as to maintain Sandeman's 20 year old Tawny's unique identity & style. To taste it is a rich yet elegant combination of flavours including, dried apricots, honey, nuts, spices & vanilla. This brings endless complexity to the palate but it unfolds smoothly in the finish. To enjoy this port you should serve it slightly chilled as a stylish accompaniment to a rich appetiser as a strong cheese quiche or foie-gras.
