The Hill & Valley Series wines honour the greatness of our growers' vineyards that have defined quality at Peter Lehmann Wines since our foundation in 1979. Each vintage we keep certain parcels of fruit separate & release them as individual wines. We believe these wines to be a true expression of the varietal characters & unique terroir of the vineyards from which they are made. This single site Chardonnay displays the wonderful diversity of the Barossa region. Grapes were sourced from the Zander family property tucked away high up in the Eden Valley in the Eastern Barossa Ranges. Their vineyard is planted with the superior Bernard clones & the site is particularly cool, perched on a steep east facing slope, on lean rocky soils. This is an early picked, delicate Chardonnay with a fine green, gold tinge & a lovely balance of fruit complexity derived from careful barrel fermentation & maturation. It is a wine that will develop beautifully over the next 4-5 years during which time it will become a deeper gold colour & richer in flavour. The colour is beautiful dark cherry with a rich garnet rim. The nose is all deep chocolate, dark forest fruits with some spicy notes. The palate is richly opulent, beautifully structured with layered, fully integrated tannins supporting the depth of fruit. It is truly a Royal wine from a great red wine vintage year. It is a limited edition classical Barossa Shiraz from low-yielding vineyards. Low yielding, mature shiraz vineyards in the Stonewell & Light Pass districts of the Barossa Valley. Fermented & macerated on skins for up to 2 weeks with some partial barrel fermentation. Following pressing & clarification, the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads for Approx. 18 months. The wine is pale yellow with a youthful green hue. On the nose, there are aromas of citrus, peach & white flowers with a hint of lifted spice. The finely-structured, lemon-tinged Semillon supports the soft floral aromatics of Muscat & the delicate spice of Gewrztraminer. Still very lively & fresh showing good citrus notes also hints of macadamia nut characters & beginnings of a light smokiness as a consequence of bottle development. Still a remarkably tight, zesty & youthful wine with a superb structure & length. Time in the bottle has deepened the lime citrus & honey dew fruit flavours which fill out the mouth while finishing clean & dry. With careful cellaring, this wine will continue to develop in the bottle for a further ten years. It is very food friendly wine & is a superb accompaniment to fuller flavoured sea food dishes, asparagus & is one of the rare wines which pairs well with fresh tomato soup! The grapes are picked early & fermented cold in stainless steel tanks. Following a 2 week fermentation period, the wine is clarified & bottled immediately before being cellared at the winery. ...
