Cornus sericea Isanti is a deciduous shrub and part of a species commonly known as Dogwood. It is a popular species for their bright coloured stems and foliage and sometimes the flowers and berries. It has deep red woody stems that becomes visible more once its foliage has started falling off towards winter after they then turn autumnal shades of red from green. Flowers May-June. Cotoneaster adpressus Little Gem also known as Cornus alba Sibirica is a deciduous shrub with dark green oval leaves and small creamy white flowers in late spring. In winter it adds a welcome burst of colour after the leaves have fallen and the bright red bare stems are revealed. It will grow in most soil conditions but looks best in full sun. Yellow or chartreuse stems characterise Cornus sericae Budds Yellow. Known for its multi-stems, and rapid growth, Budds Yellow looks stunning in a winter border, where its stems glow if there is winter sunshine. As with most shrubby, coloured stemmed cornus, Budds Yellow needs to be cut to 30cm above soil level in spring to promote the new, vigorous, brightly coloured growth. Flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers in spring give way to white bracts. Plant where you want to have winter interest, and can enjoy the lovely colour. Flowers May-June. Height 150-200cm. Cornus alba Kesselringii is grown for its vibrant purple, almost black bark in winter. It has rich green oval-shaped leaves that turn violet in autumn making for a second season of colour. Dogwood will typically grow in almost any soil, but does love wet ground. The common name, Dogwood, is of Saxon-origin, meaning wood for skewer - the straight stems make ideal skewers for roasting.
