(Softneck) - Large purple bulbs with very wide leafy growth. Fresh, zingy flavours perfect in a salad. The first taste of new season garlic. Bright, large, bulbs that lift themselves up out of the ground as they swell, exposing deep purple streaks and mottling. Historically originating in the village of Cadours, west of Toulouse, south west France as Violet de Cadours. (Hardneck) - Selected from the best purple stripe garlic found in Russia and Eastern Europe. Large cloved, easy peeling vigorous variety, they grow particularly well in our relatively warm UK climate, north or south, but can withstand temperatures down to -20C. Above ground it has a distinctive, dark green, vigorous wide leaf pattern and underground, the bulb is enclosed in tight leaf wrappers avoiding the pitfall of many hardneck types in our damp climate, of splitting and opening out. produces tight, firm bulbs, ready at the end of June. Native to South Africa and used by the Zulus to make a hot, peppery seasoning for meat and potatoes, but just as good chopped and scattered over scrambled eggs, salads or pasta. Both the leaves and flowers are edible, adding a hot, smoky garlic flavour to dishes. Perfect to grow in a pot or the ground, hardy to but best moved under cover during the colder months of the year, ready to grow again next year. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.
