    The base of the Frogilo
    is cut away in part to
    provide contact with the
    cool soil for summer
    conditions. In winter,
    the insulating ceramic
    shelf will be used as
    over-wintering quarters
    for toads and female
    frogs. The Frogilo may be
    covered with extra
    vegetation in winter to
    provide additional
    insulation but no other
    maintenance is necessary.

Bat Detector Baton
    The Baton is a simple but
    versatile bat detector
    having a monitor speaker
    allowing reduction of
    frequencies between 20kHz
    to 120kHz. The division
    factor is 10, reducing
    the sounds of a 50kHz bat
    to 5kHz, within the
    range of human hearing.
    The unit comes with a
    version of BatScan sound
    analysis software,
    developed especially for
    the Baton. In addition,
    if attached to the
    soundcard of a computer
    by a stereo lead from the
    line out of the Baton,
    it will produce real-time
    sonograms, allowing
    detailed analysis of
    calls when used with
    BatScan software. The
    Baton retains the
    original amplitude of the
    calls recorded, allowing
    3D analysis of bat calls.
    (time, frequency and
    intensity). Calls can
    also be recorded on other
    devices such as MP3 or
    minidisc for later
    analysis. MP3 files will
    have to be converted to
    WAV files before Batscan
    will be able to load
    them. The Baton is also
    ideal for listening to
    grasshoppers and crickets
    whose communication is in
    the upper part of, or
    above human hearing. One
    PP3 9V battery lasts for
    up to 30 hours.

    A single chamber FSC
    certified timber nesting
    box for bats, fits into
    any garden, woodland or
    house wall site. Provides
    a roost for a variety of
    species such as
    Pippistrelle, Noctule,
    Leisler's, Natterer's,
    Daubentons and Brown
    Long-eared bats. The box
    is accessed by the bats
    through a narrow entrance
    slot at the base to
    prevent predation. Site
    high up between 2.5m and
    5m on a building or
    mature tree using the
    pre-drilled back plate
    hanger. The ideal aspect
    is so the box receives
    only part sun during the
    day North, South West or
    South East. If it is on
    an existing feeding or
    flight route you are more
    likely to get occupation.
    Bats are very sensitive
    to smell and will be
    deterred by any
    treatments applied. It is
    illegal for any member of
    the public to disturb a
    roost, handle or kill
    any bat. Bat boxes,
    therefore, may only be
    inspected by a licensed
    bat worker.However, you
    can monitor your bat box
    without disturbance; look
    for mouse-sized droppings
    beneath the box as a clue
    to occupation or observe
    from a distance at dusk
    to see if bats are
    exiting the box to hunt.
