Squash Plants - Mashed Potatoes Quarter the carbs of potatoes! The squash plants ‘Mashed Potatoes’ is a bush type winter squash for larger patio containers and the open ground. This squash plant will produce acorn-type squash with white skin and almost white flesh. 450-700g fruit mainly produced at the crown of the plant. This unique squash resembles mashed potato when cooked and fluffed. Only 23 calories per serving compared to 110 calories from whole potatoes, also almost ¼ the carbs of potatoes too!
Origin: Italy. Wacky Italian cultivar with lovely, mild artichoke flavour & a long neck that’s 100% free of seeds. Actually a variety of butternut squash, picked while still tender and green. As well as looking incredibly ornamental in the garden, its big benefit in the kitchen is that it tastes sweeter than most regular courgettes. Harvest July-September.
An early ripening butternut squash, which is very high yielding, giving you a good supply throughout late summer and autumn, each one a lovely buff colour, with attractive, fine-flavoured orange flesh. Plus they're one of the most versatile of all vegetables and can be used in any way that a potato can, and stored in a frost-free place throughout winter. Award of Garden Merit winner.
Origin: Central America. You wont be able to resist a Kabocha squash (Japanese winter pumpkin), not only because of their cute size (immediately youll want to make little soup bowls out of their rinds), but also because they are tasty and good for you, rich in beta carotene, with a decent amount of vitamin C and iron to boot. The flesh near the rind is avocado green, giving way to a bright yellow-orange. You could roast them before you scoop out the flesh for a soup or they are delicious stuffed - a multi purpose sweet and savoury squash, and our favourite this year! A similar texture and flavour to a pumpkin and sweet potato combined!
A compact variety (ideal for garden or container) producing smaller, earlier maturing fruits of 1-2lbs. Cooks well in the microwave - simply pierce the skin in a few places and cook for about 12 minutes. High resistance to powdery mildew. Harvest August-October. Supplied in a 2 litre pot.
